Robert Lee Thompson, age 88, of Bristol, Florida passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was a member of Bristol First Baptist Church. Lee served in the United States Army during World War II and is considered a hero in the Battle of the Bulge. He staked his life to save fellow Americans who were penned down by a German battle tank. Lee was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Dixie Lodge #109, and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 12010. In a formal ceremony in Tallahassee Lee was awarded the prestigious French “Legion of Honor” medal. He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Lettie and Earl Brown; his wife, Bruce; his sons, Bobby Lee Thompson and William Allen Thompson; and his step-son, Everett Perkins. Survivors include his step-son, Daniel Perkins of Daytona, Florida; daughters, Wanda Campbell and her husband, Billy of Chattahoochee, Florida and Deborah Peddie and her husband, Wayne of Bristol; his step-daughter, Judy Locke and husband Dale of Tallahassee; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his sister, Helen King of Turlock, California. The family will receive friends 10:00-11:00 a.m. ET, Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Bristol First Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. ET at the church with Reverend Roger Phillips officiating. Interment will follow at Bristol Cemetery with military honors.
