Gewin Walter “Bud” Flowers died peacefully at home and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in Apalachicola, Florida at the age of 95. Bud was born in Birmingham, Alabama, March 8, 1919, to the late Walter D. and Lillian Irene Garner Flowers. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1940 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and from University of Georgia in 1949 with a degree in Commerce. Later he completed graduate work at Georgia Tech in Industrial Engineering. Bud married Louise Hope Porcher, an artist, in 1944. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, Bud began working for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a personnel manager. Over a period of seven years, the couple welcomed four children into their family. His children remember him as a loving father who encouraged them to be honest, compassionate, faithful, and generous. Bud enjoyed fishing, cooking, especially barbecue, and the Atlanta Braves. He was an active and dedicated member of several southern Baptist churches and was instrumental in the founding and growth of both the Wieuca Road Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Dunwoody. Bud was a member of the Lions Club and was deeply involved with many aspects of Dunwoody Elementary School, including chairing the PTA for a number of years. In 1964, Bud moved his family to Seoul, South Korea, where he worked as a labor advisor. He earned a number of awards and citations for his work there. In 1969, the family returned to the United States, settling in Huntsville, Alabama. Bud retired in 1974 after working at the Redstone Arsenal. In 1977, Bud and Hope moved to Apalachicola where they would spend the rest of their lives. There he was active in the community, serving on the City Planning and Zoning Board and working with the Meals on Wheels program. Bud worked with the Keenagers, and was a deacon and treasurer at The First Baptist Church of Apalachicola. He was beloved in his community. Bud was a loving, compassionate caregiver for his wife, Hope, during her long illness, and, during his last years, Bud was devotedly cared for by his daughter, Holly Lemons. Bud is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise Hope Porcher Flowers. He is survived by his children, April Louise Porcher Flowers of Sunnyvale, California, Holly Ann Flowers Lemons of Apalachicola, Mayre Irene Flowers of Whitefish, Montana, and Philip Walter Flowers and his wife, Kathy of Harvest, Alabama; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
