Hershel Lee Mears, 84, of Blountstown, Florida, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014, in Blountstown.
He was born April 7, 1930, near Altha, Florida, to the late Jacob Irvin and Nora (Yon) Mears. Hershel attended a one room school until junior high school at Altha and graduated from Altha High School with his younger brother, Houston Eugene, in 1948. Since his brother Robert Hayes had already joined the United States Navy, Hershel and Houston decided to serve their country in the United States Air Force. Hershel served eight years in England, Japan, and several other countries. When he returned to the states, he married Hazel Roberts and they were blessed with a daughter, Annette. He spent many years in the pipe fitting industry in various states. Hershel married again and they had a son, Hershel Lee Mears, Jr., who is deceased.
Other than his parents and his son, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Hayes Mears and his wife, Willow Dean, Houston Eugene Mears, Hiram Wesley Mears, and a brother-in-law, Charles L. Parker.
Survivors include a daughter, Annette Grant, of Winter Haven, Florida; several grandchildren; his brother, Burton Mears, and his wife, Martha, of Bristol, Florida; four sisters, Etta Mae Parker of Scotts Ferry, Florida, Mary E. McClain of Winter Park, Audrey N. Clemmons and her husband, Aubrey, of Eagle Lake, Florida, and Barbara Ann Floyd and her husband, Gene, of Winter Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, at Adams Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sunny Hill Cemetery near Altha.
