David M. “Tootie” Wood
David M. “Tootie” Wood, 73, of Altha, Florida, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013.
He was a surveyor for the United States Geological Survey Department of the Interior for thirty-three years where he helped establish the GPS System in the United States; mapped the National Parks in the Eastern seaboard, Alaska, Puerto Rico, the Everglades, Okefenokee Swamp on foot and air boat, and also mapped the Smokie Mountains. He was a good friend to many and he loved people.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois (Willis) Lott, and his brother, Donald Wood.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Cheryl, of Altha; three sons, Roman Wood and wife, Angie, of Blountstown, Florida, Shawn Wood and wife, Sherry, of Chattahoochee, Florida, and Pace Wood and fiancé, Barbara Tinsley, of Altha; grandsons, Taylor Tootie Wood, Bryson Wood and Tristen Wood; and his dad, Hayward Lott, of Aiken, South Carolina.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement in Blountstown at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 11. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
